Work out how many tiles and how much grout your job needs. Enter the area, your tile size and a wastage allowance, and the calculator returns tile count, box quantities and grout in kilograms.

How to use

  1. Enter the total area to be tiled in square metres.
  2. Enter the tile width and height in millimetres.
  3. Set a wastage allowance — 10% is the usual starting point.
  4. Add tiles per box if you know it, to get a box count.
  5. Enter the grout coverage and bag size from the product datasheet.

Notes

  • Allow 10% wastage on a straight lay, 15% for diagonal, herringbone or patterned layouts, and more again on small rooms with many cuts.
  • Grout coverage depends on tile size and joint width as much as on the product. Large-format tiles use far less grout per square metre than mosaics.
  • Buy all tiles in one order. Batch shading varies noticeably between production runs.
  • Keep a box spare after completion for future repairs.

FAQs

How much wastage should I allow for tiles?

10% for a standard straight lay, 15% for diagonal or patterned layouts. Increase it further for rooms with lots of cuts, or where the tile is large-format and a single bad cut wastes a whole piece.

How much grout do I need?

It varies with tile size, joint width and tile thickness. Large-format floor tiles with 3mm joints might use under 0.5kg per m²; small mosaics with wide joints can use several times that. Use the coverage figure printed on the bag.

Should I tile before or after fitting sanitaryware?

Tile first, in almost every case. Tiling up to and behind fitted units gives a cleaner junction and makes future replacement much simpler.
