How to use

  1. Enter the total length of the fence run in metres.
  2. Choose the panel height.
  3. Select whether you are using gravel boards.
  4. Read the panel, post and postcrete quantities.

Notes

  • Standard UK fence panels are 1.83m (6ft) wide. A run of n panels needs n+1 posts.
  • Post length should allow for burying roughly a quarter to a third of the post. A 1.8m fence normally uses a 2.4m post.
  • Typically 1–2 bags of postcrete per post, depending on hole size and soil.
  • ألواح القاعدة keep the panel clear of wet ground and are far cheaper to replace than a panel.

FAQs

How many fence posts do I need?

One more than the number of panels. A 12m run using 1.83m panels needs 7 panels and 8 posts.

How deep should fence posts go?

Around a quarter to a third of the total post length, so roughly 600mm for a 1.8m high fence. Go deeper on exposed sites and in loose or sandy ground.

Do I need permission to put up a fence?

In England, a fence up to 2m generally does not need planning permission, dropping to 1m where it fronts a highway. Listed buildings, conservation areas and boundary agreements with neighbours can all change this, so check before you build.
