Build up your wall, roof or floor layer by layer, enter each material’s thermal conductivity (λ) and thickness, and the calculator returns total thermal resistance and the resulting U-value. How to use

  1. Enter each layer’s λ value in W/mK and its thickness in millimetres. The reference table above covers common materials.
  2. Add up to five layers, working from outside to inside.
  3. Set the internal and external surface resistances (Rsi and Rse) for the element you are calculating.
  4. Read the total R value and the U-value.

Notes

  • Lower is better. A U-value of 0.18 W/m²K loses less heat than 0.30 W/m²K.
  • Commonly used targets for new and extended elements in England are around 0.18 W/m²K for walls and floors, 0.15–0.16 for roofs and 1.4 for windows. Confirm the figures that apply to your project — they are tightened periodically.
  • Typical surface resistances: walls Rsi 0.13 / Rse 0.04; roofs Rsi 0.10 / Rse 0.04; floors Rsi 0.17.
  • This uses the simple layered method. Repeating thermal bridges such as timber studs or metal ties need the combined method in BS EN ISO 6946, which produces a slightly worse figure.

FAQs

What is a good U-value for a wall?

Around 0.18 W/m²K meets current expectations for new build and extensions in England. Existing solid walls often sit above 2.0 W/m²K before insulation, which is why retrofit gains can be so large.

Can I use this for Building Control?

Use it for design decisions and early checks. Formal submissions need a SAP or full elemental calculation from a qualified assessor, which accounts for thermal bridging and junction detail.

What is lambda (λ)?

Thermal conductivity — how readily a material conducts heat, in W/mK. Lower is better. PIR board sits around 0.022, mineral wool around 0.035–0.044, and dense concrete block above 1.0.
