Work out how much timber a frame needs before you order it. Enter your dimensions, the centres you are working to and any openings, and the calculator returns the number of members and the total run in metres for walls, floors, ceilings, rafters, battens and furring strips.

How to use

  1. Choose the component you are framing.
  2. Enter the overall dimensions and the timber section size.
  3. Set your centres — 400mm or 600mm covers most UK work.
  4. Deduct openings for doors, windows, stairs and skylights.
  5. Add a wastage allowance before ordering.

Notes

  • Studs at 600mm centres suit most non-loadbearing partitions; 400mm is standard where boards need more support or the wall is loadbearing.
  • The count includes an extra member at the end of each run, since a wall of n bays needs n+1 studs.
  • Rafter lengths are worked from slope length, not plan width. Check your pitch is entered correctly.
  • Order 10% over on long runs to allow for cutting and defects.

FAQs

What spacing should timber studs be at?

400mm or 600mm centres. 600mm is the usual choice for internal non-loadbearing partitions; 400mm is used for loadbearing walls, where heavier boards are fixed, or where a wall carries fixings such as wall-hung sanitaryware.

How much wastage should I allow on timber?

Around 10% for straightforward framing, rising to 15% on cut roofs and anything with a lot of angles.

Does this cover loadbearing design?

No. It gives quantities, not structural sizing. Member sizes for anything loadbearing must come from a structural engineer.
