Work out how many blocks a wall needs and how much mortar goes with them. Enter the wall dimensions, deduct any openings, set your block size and joint thickness, and the calculator returns block count, mortar volume and bag quantities.

How to use

  1. Enter the wall length and height.
  2. Deduct the area of doors, windows and any other openings.
  3. Select the block size and thickness.
  4. Set the mortar joint — 10mm is standard.
  5. Add wastage and read the block and mortar totals.

Notes

  • The standard UK block is 440 × 215mm. With 10mm joints that gives a coordinating size of 450 × 225mm, or roughly 10 blocks per square metre.
  • Block thickness does not change the number of blocks per m², only the mortar volume and the wall’s weight and performance.
  • Allow around 0.012–0.02m³ of mortar per m² of single-skin blockwork at 10mm joints.
  • Order 5–10% over. Batches vary in colour and texture, so matching later is difficult.

How many concrete blocks per square metre?

About 10, using the standard 440 × 215mm block with 10mm mortar joints. Multiply your net wall area in square metres by 10 and add wastage.

How much mortar do I need for blockwork?

Roughly 0.012–0.02m³ per square metre of single-skin wall. A 1:5 or 1:6 cement to soft sand mix suits general blockwork; 1:4 is used below DPC and in more exposed conditions.

Dense or lightweight blocks?

Dense aggregate blocks carry more load and give better sound resistance. Lightweight aerated blocks insulate better and are far easier to lift and cut. The inner leaf of a cavity wall is usually lightweight; loadbearing and below-ground work is usually dense.
